AUGUSTA, Ga. — A star-studded leaderboard and patron-filled course have the 2022 Masters already reaching a fever pitch as Round 2 action begins Friday. Sung-jae Im tops that board at 5 under after a stellar first 18 holes, but his lead is minuscule with Cameron Smith, former champions Danny Willett and Dustin Johnson, Joaquín Niemann and Scottie Scheffler among those nipping at his heels as the second day of action begins.
Still, it’s Tiger Woods who is drawing most of the air out of the atmosphere at Augusta National. Playing his first event in 17 months — and just 14 months removed from nearly losing his leg — Woods shot the most remarkable 71 in Masters history to sit T11 and just four shots back of Im. Tiger is not only likely to make the cut barring disaster Friday, he may well be in contention to win his sixth green jacket entering the weekend. All of it makes for a must-watch second round that should be thrilling from sunrise to sunset on Friday.

Masters leader Sungjae Im opens with bogey
After opening birdie-birdie-birdie on Thursday, Round 1 leader Sungjae Im opens Round 2 with a bogey at No. 1 to drop back into a share of the lead with Aussie Cameron Smith. Im’s drive on No. 1 split the fairway, but he missed his approach and bungled his chip into the green, too.

Masters leader kicks off Round 2
Early wave from Thursday will tee off in the late wave Friday, and vice versa. That means Masters leader Sungjae Im, who was one of the last groups on the course Thursday, is among the earliest groups off today. He’s teeing off now, clinging to a one-stroke lead.
Will be interesting to see how Im handles today as the frontrunner. Thursday he was the hunter, Friday the hunted. Can he start fast again? Can he extend, or at least hang on, to that lead? Round 1 was built on a hot start with three birdies in his first three holes, something no other golfer did.

Challenging conditions Friday for Round 2
Already a really cold one at Augusta National today. Golfers are bundled up, hands in pockets navigating around the range this morning. High supposed to be around 67 this afternoon so it should warm up, but wind expected to be in the high teens today. Undoubtedly going to be some big numbers posted in the afternoon.
