This unique, community-based program for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities creates “teachable moments” to assist participants in learning communication, social, and daily living skills, according to a press release.

Over the past 18 months, the focus shifted to supporting individuals through the pandemic, providing education on the virus, how to remain safe and offering virtual services to alleviate the isolation during the quarantine.

People with I/DD are at a higher risk of infection and more severe symptoms; therefore, many families and caregivers remain cautious, limiting their contact with others, the news release said.

“The adult skill development and leisure program is a vital part of many people’s lives. In pre-COVID times, we provided engaging and instructional activities in natural, real-life settings focused on communication skills, safety awareness, healthy choices, physical well-being, and other daily living skills,” President and CEO Melissa Davison-Wood said in a prepared statement.

“Now we have the added challenge of accommodating families based on their comfort levels with being in groups and in the community. That’s why this grant is so important in ensuring people with I/DD do not get left behind,” Davison-Wood added.

The initiative has been operating for over 30 years and is funded solely by foundations and fundraising. The Harold & Rebecca H. Gross Foundation was established in 2006 to support and promote charitable organizations with the primary purpose of assisting persons with physical disabilities to become better adjusted to their environments.
